YouTube now mutes alerts from channels you don't watch

Since April 2026, YouTube stops sending phone push notifications from a channel you subscribe to when you haven't watched it for about a month and have been ignoring its alerts. The notifications still reach the Inbox in the YouTube app, and the videos still appear in your Subscriptions feed. Only the alert on your phone goes quiet.

What changed, and when

YouTube started testing this in March 2025. On 21 April 2026 it announced in a YouTube Help Community post that the change was rolling out permanently, and it was reported over the following days by Engadget, Social Media Today and others. YouTube's reason: in the test, fewer viewers turned off notifications for individual channels, or for the YouTube app altogether.

Who it affects

YouTube calls these subscribers "inactive" for a channel. You are one for a given channel only if all three of these are true:

  • You set the channel's bell to “All”.

  • You haven't watched or otherwise engaged with the channel's videos for about a month.

  • You have received recent push notifications from it and ignored them.

There is one exemption. If the channel itself hasn't uploaded recently, none of its subscribers count as inactive: with no recent notifications, there is nothing you could have ignored.

What still works

Nothing is hidden. The notification still appears in the Inbox (the bell icon in the YouTube app), and the Subscriptions feed still shows every new video from the channels you subscribe to. What you lose is the push alert, which is what tells you about a video without you having to go and look.

If you want every upload

The rule is about your engagement with a channel, so there are three ways round it:

  • Watch the channel now and then. Engagement is what YouTube measures. YouTube hasn't said how quickly push alerts come back once you do.

  • Check the Inbox. It's free and already there, but you have to go and look, which is what a notification was meant to save you from.

  • Use something that doesn't depend on your watch history. Missing alerts for another reason?

This change only explains silence from channels you haven't watched lately. If alerts are missing from a channel you watch every week, the cause is something else, such as the bell setting, your phone, a daily digest or YouTube's own limits.
