YouTube notifications not working?
When YouTube notifications stop arriving, the cause is almost always a setting (on the channel's bell, in the YouTube app or on your phone) or one of YouTube's own limits. Work down the list below. Most people find the cause in the first three.
1. The bell is set to “Personalized” instead of “All”
Each channel's bell has three settings. “All” notifies you of long-form uploads and live streams (and some Shorts). “Personalized” sends only some uploads, Shorts and live streams, chosen from what you watch. “None” sends nothing.
On the channel's page, tap the bell and choose “All” for any channel where you don't want to miss a video.
2. Notifications are off on your phone or computer
Your device's own notification settings override YouTube's. If the YouTube app, or your browser on a computer, isn't allowed to show notifications, nothing gets through however the bell is set. Check the app's notification permission in your phone's settings.
3. Subscription notifications are off in the YouTube app
In the app, go to your profile picture → Settings → Notifications. Notifications about your subscriptions and about recommended videos are separate switches there, so one can be off while the other is on.
4. The scheduled digest is on
Settings → Notifications → Scheduled digest combines a day's push notifications into a single daily notification at the time you choose. It's off by default. If you turned it on, individual alerts won't come through during the day.
5. Battery saving is holding the app back
On some Android phones, aggressive battery saving delays or blocks notifications from apps it considers idle. If alerts arrive late or in bursts, check whether YouTube is restricted in your phone's battery settings.
6. YouTube's own limits
YouTube sends at most three notifications from a channel in 24 hours, and a creator who publishes more than three videos in a day can have notifications held back. Community posts are limited further: one notification in three days.
7. The creator didn't notify subscribers
Some causes are on the channel's side. A creator can publish without the option that notifies subscribers, videos marked as made for kids don't send notifications, and a video made private shortly after it went up won't notify anyone.
8. You haven't watched the channel lately
Since April 2026, YouTube stops phone push alerts from a channel whose bell is on "All" if you haven't engaged with it for about a month and have ignored its recent alerts. They still show in the Inbox. What changed, and who it affects.
If you can't afford to miss a video
Every item above is a way for a YouTube notification not to reach you, and several are YouTube's choice rather than yours. If a channel or a series really matters, get told outside YouTube. Common questions
Why am I not getting notifications for a channel I'm subscribed to?
Usually the bell for that channel is on Personalized rather than All, notifications are off on your phone, or the scheduled digest is on. Since April 2026 YouTube also stops push alerts from channels you haven't watched in about a month.
The bell is on All. Why do I still miss videos?
YouTube caps notifications at three per channel per day, some Shorts are only notified selectively, and a creator can publish without notifying subscribers. Your phone's notification and battery settings can also block alerts.
Are missed notifications gone for good?
No. The videos still appear in your Subscriptions feed, and notifications YouTube stopped pushing still appear in the Inbox in the YouTube app.
Is there a way to never miss an upload?
Yes, if you get told outside YouTube. Use a feed reader with the channel's RSS feed, or an email or Telegram alert service such as Listabell, which messages you about every new upload however long it's been since you watched.
